Nerja a lovely seaside town

Once a small sleepy fishing village, the town now has a population of over 20,000. Nerja is ringed to the north by the rugged mountains of the Sierra de Almijara, which reach 1832m at Navachica.

Nerja today is a popular international holiday resort, but at the same time managed to keep its own identity and to remain a lively living Andalucian town. The old quarters of the town are still virtually unchanged with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses with wrought iron terraces overflowing with geraniums, on which a canary can sometimes be heard singing...

a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.

Church of El Salvador

The town's monuments include the 17th century Church of El Salvador, positioned on one end of Balcon de Europa.

Nerja has more restaurants and bars (tapas) than number of days in a year. The choice is yours from chirinquitos, smallish bars, rustic decor, terrace seatings to fine dining, with several open until the early hours of the morning, (particularly during the summer).

 Beaches

 

Nerja boasts allegedly 16 km of beaches with sand and pebble stone, sparkling clear water. All major water sports are available here, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing.

Torrecilla Beach

  • Located at the bottom on Nerja Town centre. You can hire sun beds and parasols. Showers on the beach. There are a few bars/restaurants right on the beach. There is a nice promenade that takes you along to Playazo beach and beyond.

Playazo Beach

  • Situated to the West of Nerja Town centre, around the corner from Torecilla Beach. Playazo Beach is the longest beach in Nerja. Playazo Beach is generally much less crowded than other beaches mainly because of the fewer bars and restaurants and other facilities. There are showers on the beach, and toilet facilities in the form of portable wooden cabins more or less situated at each end of the beach, and only open during the summer months.

  • Immediately to the West of Balcon de Europa,

Calahonda Beach

  • Immediately to the East of Balcon de Europa, it’s a small beach, quite sheltered. Lot of rocks to either side of the beach, and in between a sandy beach. Sun beds and parasols for hire.

Playa de Burriana

perhaps the most popular and well-known beach of them all. Parking can be a bit difficult in the summer, especially on Sundays and during the month of August. The beach is about 800 meters long and is in a bay, East of Nerja Town centre.

 Frigiliana

  • Just 7km north of Nerja is the typical pueblo blanco (white village) of Frigiliana, which sits high on a mountain ridge (330 meter above sea level) overlooking the sea with spectacular panoramic views.

Acebuchal village

  • is ituated 5km outside Frigiliana, in a stunning valley location in the heart of Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama natural park. The village / hamlet was abandent in 1949 and it remained in ruins until 1998 when El Zumbo and his wife Virtudes returned and started to rebuild the village / hamlet Alledegly the original village / hamlet was founded in the 17th Century.

Nerja Caves

  • However, Nerja's most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly its fascinating caves located just 4km from the centre of Nerja. The Nerja Caves are located closer to Maro.

    Few visitors knew anything about this part of the coast until 1959, when five young boys, out hunting for bats behind Maro discovered a remarkable system of caves and ancient cave paintings

    The caves include archaeological treasures such as paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains. One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many performances are staged during July and August every year.

Playa de Maro

  • The beach is signed Playa de Maro. From Maro walk down the hillside to the beach allow 15-20 minutes, from the center of Maro, its over 1 km. You are unable to drive all the way down to the beach, however a few minutes walk after you parked your car is worth it. The beach is a mixture of sand and shingle. There is one beach bar. The pretty and charming village of Maro is situated on the coast, 3,5 km to the east of Nerja, about 5-8 minutes drive and it is also served by the local bus service from Nerja.
