Peace and quiet, but a bit more sparkling than the other Small Cyclades Islands. Even the nightlife is more vibrant, but still low key.

Kato and Pano Koufonissi and Keros Koufonissi Islands consists of three main islands, Kato (Lower) and Pano (Upper) Koufonissi, and Keros. Geographically, it is located on the southeast side of Naxos and on the west side of Amorgos.
Agios Georgios – Chora
The only settlement of Agios Georgios (Koufonissi town-Chora) on the southwest coast of Koufonissi is a characteristic example of Cycladic architecture. Once only a small fishing village. The exterior surfaces of the houses and all other buildings are painted white and blue in order to match with the boundless blue of the Aegean Sea and create a modern but also magic atmosphere with a popular harbour a good choice of bars, tavernas and some shops.
Good looking sandy town beach. You will find most of the islands accommodation here. On one side of the port, the Yacht Marina, and further along the road there are several good places to stay. On the other side of the port follow the beach/sea promenade a wide bay and the town beach named Ammos. Behind the port and the beach, slightly elevated most of the accommodation, tavernas, a supermarket is located.
To get around the Island
Walking
Koufonissi can easily be explored by walking about, actually between 3-4 hours to walk around the whole Island. A nice and scenic route is to take the track that runs parallel to Koufonissi's southern coastline it will give you excellent opportunities to select the "best beach for you".
Cycling
If you preferred to speed up, rent a bike. Places for bike rentals located in Koufonissi town. (2022 During the high season, a small privately own bus offers regular routes that cover most beaches).
Boating
Organised scheduled boat trips from the port daily in the high summer season. Charter a boat with the skipper and visit Cape Xylobatis, on the northern coast, which features many sea caves, the isolated beaches of Kato Koufonissi.

Try the local traditional fresh fish, lobsters, and other varied seafood dishes. Lobster pasta is superb. Grilled fish. Greek salad, Lobster salad. Mezethes platter might include a selection of three to five of the following, olives, tomatoes, tzatziki, dolmades, bread, slice of salami, fried cheese pie, something small and appetizing served together with an Ouzo apertif. A few tavernas have live music.

Aneplora restaurant, cafe and bar located in the bay of Perianos just under 1.4km from the port. Fish and Seafood.
To Steki Tis Marias is a family-owned ouzo cafe with years of tradition in Loutro area of Chora, southeast of the port walking distance 300 meters, Spilia area of Chora. Open from Breakfast to lunch and evening meals and aperitifos.
Captain Nikolas Taverna approximately 400 meters from the port, Spilia/Loutro area of Chora . The large display of cooked food will tempt your appetite like traditional crusty pies, fish entrées, pasta with seafood and dishes prepared for meat lovers as well.

Glorious Beaches

Follow the coast road along the sea, out from the town, many beaches, with seafront accommodation. Pori Beach area (the furthest away beach) several villas looking over the beach, the sea, and other islands.

Pori Beach
allegedly the island’s most beautiful beach. Long, with white sand and emerald waters, it is justifiably considered one of the top beaches in the entire Cycladic region. Two café-bar-tavernas, and a small shop. On the “back” of the beach Xilobatis Bay, Gala and Cavos Pori, photogenic rock, cliff and cave formation.
If you walk to the west
from Ammos Beach you will pass the port the Marina to Spilia and Loutro. Small shingle beaches on your way before you pass the small shipyard and the church. Walk along the coastal beach road a few more small beaches until you arrive in Parianos, nice beach, tavernas and accommodation available here.

Something local
The Fisherman’s Feast is held on the last Saturday of June. Excellent sea food titbits and wine. Traditional live music, entertainment and you are welcome to join in for a dance in the streets.

The Day of the Assumption of the Virgin (Panagia), August 15, all the islanders go by boat to Kato Koufonissi, after mass the celebration starts.
Best time to get here
Book accommodation and ferry tickets early, for the high season (July and August) as accommodation and ferry tickets supply is of high demand.
From middle May - June and to the end of September great time to visit Koufonissi islands, busy, but not too crowded, nice temperature, the sea is warmer in the autumn.
How to get here
By Air
Koufonissi has no airport. The nearest islands with airports are Naxos (JNX) and Paros (PAS) with connections from-to Athens (ATH) airport. International flights, charter flights, and low fare airlines use Santorini (JTR) and Mykonos (JMK) airports.

By Sea
Ferry services daily from Naxos during the year if weather permits, increase to several ferries a day during high season. Other Cyclades islands with direct or indirect connection during high season to Koufonissi is Amorgos, Folegandros, Iraklia, Milos Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Schinoussa and Syros.
Island hoppers
Allow plenty of time for your return flight and always plan and arrange an easily accessible final return port of call. Play safe is the name of the game, allow a minimum at least one clear day to spare or more. Ferries can be cancelled due to very strong winds and so on.
