The Great Mezquita and Cathedral

19 Doors

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba has 19 doors, each of which is strategically positioned.

Patio de Los Naranjos

is a classic Islamic courtyard, with fountains that were used by the faithful before prayer. The orange trees is still preserved, however the original fountains has not survived, the present ones are later additions, and more decorative than the original used by the faithful.

Torre del Alminar

The over 93 meter high bell tower, Torre del Alminar, is a well recognised building in the high walls surrounding the Mezquita. The tower was built on the site of the original minaret.

Steep steps lead up to the top. You can visit the Bell Tower.

Pilars and arches

There are more than 850 columns (granite, marble) horse shaped red and white striped patterned arches above the lower pillars. These semi circular arches formed part of the construction base that supports the roof.

The Cathedral dome

Part of the mosque was destroyed in year 1523, to accommodate the Cathedral. Nearly three centuries after the Christian conquest, the dream of of a Christian Cathedral was built after King Carlos V sanctioned the work.

Mihrab

The mosques great treasure - the sacred Mihrab -

This richly ornamented prayer niche, the much used flagstones indicated to the pilgrims to circulate on their knees, seven times. The Mihrab faces, in Islamic worship, the direction of Mecca and it augmented the words of the Imam (the prayer leader).

Sleeping in Cordoba

I have had the pleasure to visit and stayed over night in Cordoba several times, with my family, and with friends and for special events/concerts twice to see and listen to Mark Knopfler, evening show in the bullring arena. The majority of times in and close around the old Jewish quarter and a 10-20 minutes walk to the Mezquita.

Eurostars Conquistador Hotel 4 star. The hotel boast of having the most famous neighbor in Córdoba, the Mezquita, acclaimed throughout the world as one of the great works of art of humanity. In fact, we are so close to the Mezquita that we even have a small part of it in our hotel.

La Macia Alfaros Hotel 4 star. Good facilities and parking. About 10 minutes walk to the Mezquita.

Hosteria Riad Lineros 38 2 star. This Moorish style lovingly created by the owners. About 20 minutes walk to the Mezquita.

There are places to stay all over Cordoba. If you arrive by car make sure you know if there is any parking area in or just around the hotel, especially in the Jewish Quarter.
