Sevilla Cathedral and Giralda

Built on the foundations of the original Almohad mosque is the Cathedral of Sevilla. You can enter the Cathedral through one of the eight doors.

It’s a big Cathedral just a little short of 130 meters long and 83 meters wide, and has a structure of five naves. It rises to a height of 42 m (138 ft) and it has a surface of 8,816 square meters (9,641 square yd). It has 80 chapels! The interior has the longest nave, (central hall), in Spain.

The altarpiece (retablo) is also the biggest one in Spain and is one of the most impressive of the Christian world. Inside the cathedral are Flemish stained glass windows from the 16th century and over 500 artistic treasures and paintings ranging from the 16th century up to today.

Tomb of Cristobal Colon.

Inside the Puerta de los Principes stands the monumental tomb of Cristobal Colon – Christopher Columbus.

It shows four heralds representing the kingdoms of Castile, Leon, Aragon and Navarre holding the coffin of the Discoverer on their shoulders.

There is also a stuffed crocodile, known as El Lagarto.

It was a gift from the Sultan of Egypt to King Alfonso X, for asking for the hand in marriage of his daughter Berenguela.

la Giralda

Built as a minaret for the Almohad mosque towards the end of 1180.

la Giralda has 24 bells,18 of which revolve up and down and 6 of which are of the clapper type.

The original building was 76 meters the height, today is 93 meters, El Patio de Los Naranjos is together with la Giralda the only things left of the old main mosque.

At the very top is El Giraldillo, a 16th century bronze weather vane constructed in the shape of a woman, representing Faith.
