Axarquia Region in Andalucia

is the area located east of Malaga, the region is less developed than the western side of Malaga. Axarquia is the part of Malaga province that stretches from the east of Malaga to the little village of Maro, just outside the popular seaside town of Nerja. Inland it follows the mountain ranges of Las Sierra Tejeda and Almijara up to the small village of Alfarnate.

Axarquia is breathtakingly beautiful with coastal towns and beaches and white mountain villages. Maroma is the highest mountain (over 2,050m) snow-capped during the winter months overlooking the stunning Lake Vinuela. Excellent region for hiking and walking holidays. Horse riding is similarly popular.

The white or pink colours of the Almond trees that blossom in January and February add to the beauty of the countryside.

There are many different varieties of avocado, mango, olive and citrus trees. There are also vineyards and colourful springtime flowers, all of which are offered in this sub-tropical climate.

Axarquia will surprise you with its beauty and charm, dramatic mountain scenery, verdant valleys, and the ever welcoming Andalusians.

There are a host of pretty villages like Frigiliana with its narrow cobbled streets and situated on a hillside.

Nerja has a cosmopolitan atmosphere and good beaches. Just outside Nerja is the Cuevas de Nerja, discovered at the end of the 1950s. These popular caves are open for visitors all year round.

Velez Malaga is the capital of the Axarquía.
